The Pluse and the Pluck: A Dialogue of Time

In 1997. a young Guzheng student named Chih-Lin Chou walked into her professor's studio with a bold request. "Write me a piece that bridges the Guzheng 's ancient soul with the future", she urged Kevin Austin, a composer known for pushing boundaries. Intrigued, he agreed-but life, teaching, and creative detours delayed hte promise. Years later, as Chih-Lin blossomed into a concert guzheng performer and cultural ambassador, a letter arrived on Kevin's desk: My concert is n three months Have you finished the piece? The challenge reignited their spark. Kevin wove the Guzheng's shimmering tones with pulsing electroacoustic texutres; Chih-Lin  infused each note with the patience and passion she'd honed through years of healing others. Together, they birthed "Waves and Tide of Time"- a piece that premiered at Montreal's Oscor Peterson Concert Hall in 2003, echoing both the whispers of ancient China and the hum of modern innovation. Today, BPP Music stands as their shared legacy:a place where East and West harmonize, where music heals as fiercely as it inspires, and where a teacher's promise to a student became the foundation of a community. Because great music isn't just heard-it's felt across lifetimes.

I'd never touched a Chinese instrument before, but the Guzheng's elegance captivated me. It's challenging yet soothing like painting with sound.
